What Are Spanish Immersion Programs

Spanish immersion programs provide a unique opportunity for you to further your knowledge of the Spanish language by spending time overseas in a foreign country. If you are interested in becoming fluent in Spanish and you would like to do it quickly, then you should definitely look into the many Spanish immersion programs that are available.

In a nutshell, if you choose to go into a Spanish immersion program, what you will be doing is traveling to a foreign country where Spanish is the native language. This means that most likely, you will be visiting a country in South or Central America, but there are Spanish immersion programs available in Spain as well.

Typically you will choose the duration of your stay on your own. Spanish immersion programs range from a period of as short as two weeks up to as long as three months. Most students in these types of programs live with a local family in their home during their stay. This is called a "homestay" and is an integral part of the program.

Classroom Instruction In Spanish Immersion Programs

Perhaps the only thing that Spanish immersion programs have in common with traditional language studies is the classroom instruction.  Classroom instruction is at the heart of all Spanish immersion programs.  The amount of classroom instruction will vary with the program.  Some programs will have three hours each day.  Some will have seven hours each day.  Some will have classroom instruction three days a week while others will have it every weekday.

The difference between the classroom instruction in a Spanish immersion program vs. traditional classroom instruction is that classroom instruction in an immersion program is conducted entirely in Spanish.  Speaking any other language during the classroom instruction time (or any other time in the immersion program) is discouraged.

The Principle of Immersion

Spanish immersion programs help you become fluent in Spanish very rapidly because the principle of immersion is implemented. This is the very reason why these types of programs take place in other countries. By getting you out of your own country and culture, and getting you into a different country and culture, the principle of immersion is accomplished. You are literally "immersed" in the language.

If you attend a Spanish immersion program in South America, Spanish will be the language that you will literally be surrounded with all of the time. Your classes are conducted in Spanish, the language that you use in your homestay is Spanish, you are in a Spanish culture where everyday activities are all carried out in Spanish, etc.

Vacationing In Spanish Immersion Programs

Language immersion programs can be a very rich and rewarding experience also because of the vacationing type of characteristics that go along with them. While such a program is not in any way a lazy vacation, it can be very much like a vacation because of the fact that you are in a foreign country. The vast majority of Spanish immersion programs integrate travel and sightseeing into the program. Attendance at cultural events on evenings and weekends is encouraged.

You might think that participating in such an activity might be daunting or intimidating, but it really isn't, because you have the opportunity to attend these events with a group of your fellow immersion school students. Being able to participate and experience these events as a group will take the pressure off of you and allow you to relax and enjoy it a bit more.

Exposure To A Different Culture

It goes without saying that your participation in a Spanish immersion program will expose you to a different culture. You might think that living in a different culture would be uncomfortable. Perhaps it might be a bit at first, but you will adapt very quickly within a day or two. As a matter of fact, many people grow accustomed to, and begin to even prefer, the culture of the country they are visiting. Typically the pace of life in South America is much more relaxed. Life isn't so hectic and stressed in South America as it tends to be in the United States. You often do not realize how hectic and stressful life is in the United States until you actually leave the States for awhile. It is not unusual for a United States citizen visiting South America to not want to come back to the States because they have a newly found realization of how stressful their lives are at home.

That would be great, but pretty expensive....? I was thinking about buying the first couple levels of the Rosetta Stone program for learning Spanish. What do you think about that program?
